Why You’ll Love This Tropical Smoothie Recipe

The most obvious (and in my opinion, the most important) reason you’ll love this smoothie is that it’s SO TASTY. Here are a few more reasons!

  • It’s made with simple ingredients and no added sugar, sweetened by just fruit
  • It’s naturally plant-based, gluten-free & tree-nut free
  • It’s high in fiber. Since blending doesn’t remove fiber, this smoothie is super filling and satisfying! Most people don’t consume nearly enough fiber, so including fresh fruits in your diet is a perfect way to add more. Plus, blending fruits allows you to easily consume a much higher quantity than if you were eating the fruits on their own. (NOTE: some believe that blending fruits “destroys” the fiber, but that’s not actually true. On the contrary, it can actually make it easier to digest for certain people.)
  • It’s customizable: you can adjust the ingredients to your liking by omitting any you may not love as much and adding others you either happen to have at hand or prefer (some great additions include: papaya, pineapple, or kiwifruit.) While this tropical smoothie does include a small amount of protein, you can also include more by blending in a protein powder (this one is my personal favorite.)

Naturally Sweet & Nourishing

Fruit is called “Nature’s Candy” for a reason. It’s delicious and so naturally sweet that it’s often enjoyed for dessert. There is a lot of fear mongering equating fruit sugar to refined sugars, but they’re very different and fruit has so many benefits!

Eating fruit is associated with increased fiber intake, a boost in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, as well as a reduced risk of disease. While some people, for instance those with fructose malabsorption or fructose intolerance, should avoid eating too much fruit, consuming fruit is beneficial for most.

Tropical Smoothie Recipe – Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

The following is an overview of the ingredients you’ll need to make this tropical smoothie recipe, as well as recommended substitutions. For the exact measurements, be sure to refer to the recipe card below.

frozen mango in a bowl
  • Frozen Mango: Mangoes are perfect for smoothies. If you’re using fresh instead of frozen mango, just make sure your mangoes are ripe enough or they won’t be as sweet. Also make sure you peel them first and remove the stone. Alternatives to mangoes include: papaya, pineapple, and peaches.
  • Frozen Strawberries: you can use either frozen or fresh strawberries and/or replace them with raspberries. Though not a tropical fruit, they complement the other ingredients in this tropical smoothie recipe perfectly.
  • Frozen Passion fruit (also called “Maracuja” or “Maracuya”): frozen passion fruit chunks are ideal, but if you can’t find them, you can use fresh ones (I’d recommend about 2-3 fresh passion fruit per 1/2 cup of frozen passion fruit chunks). Simply slice them open and scoop the flesh directly into your blender (be sure to discard the rind as it’s inedible.)

  • Orange: make sure you peel the orange and remove its seeds before blending it! Instead of orange, you can use tangerines or pineapple.
  • Banana: if you don’t like the taste of bananas, let me reassure you that you can barely taste the banana in this tropical smoothie recipe, it just adds a little extra sweetness and creaminess. You can, of course, omit it if you’d like. Simply replace it with more mango or any of the other ingredients.
  • Coconut water: coconut water includes electrolytes, making it extra hydrating. You can, however, also just use regular still water and it’ll taste just as great!
NAMA C2 JUICER & BLENDER
  • A blender: a high speed blender is ideal for this tropical smoothie recipe. I personally love my Nama C2 Blender & Juicer (it’s the exact same as the Nama J2 Juicer, but also includes a blender!)
  • Optional accessories: all other accessories are optional, but I’d recommend drinking your smoothie with a reusable stainless steel or glass straw to protect your teeth. For easy storage, glass bottles are my favorite!

How to Make This Tropical Smoothie Recipe (Step by Step)

The following is a step-by-step overview of how to make this beetroot juice recipe. For a recap, be sure to check out the recipe card below.

Step One: Prepare Your Produce & Add it to Your Blender

Start by preparing your produce:

  • Remove the frozen fruit from the freezer (if using a high-speed blender, you don’t need to let it thaw, but if you’re using a regular blender, I’d recommend thawing the fruit for a few minutes to avoid damaging your blender’s blades.)
  • Peel the banana and orange and remove the orange’s seeds.

Next, add all ingredients to your blender.

Step Two: Add The Blender’s Lid & Start Blending

Add the lid and start blending. Some blenders have a “smoothie” function, meaning you just need to press the button once and wait about 60 seconds.

You can also just use the manual mode (I usually prefer it). Any time I blend frozen fruit or ice cubes, I start with a slower speed and then gradually increase it until the frozen elements are fully blended and the smoothie has a perfectly smooth texture.

Step Three: Serve & Enjoy Your Tropical Smoothie

Now it’s time to enjoy your tropical smoothie! Simply pour it into glasses or jars, optionally add a reusable straw, and enjoy!

🌿Tip: to meal prep smoothies, it’s best to either prepare the individual elements in a reusable containers in the fridge and/or freezer and then blend them once you’re ready to consume your drink. If that’s not an option, however, you can blend your smoothies ahead of time and store them in glass bottles with lids in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. Alternatively, you can freeze them in ice cube trays or popsicle moulds.

If you’re enjoying your tropical smoothie right away, pour it into glasses and enjoy with a stainless steel or glass straw. If you’re planning on drinking it later, transfer it to a glass bottle with an airtight lid and store it in the fridge.

Recipe & Storage Tips

Here are a few tips to ensure the best possible result when making this tropical smoothie recipe.

  • Use at least 2 frozen ingredients: The combination of fresh and frozen fruits is what gives this smoothie its perfect, thick consistency. Feel free to switch up which fruits are frozen, but I’d recommend making sure at least two of them are frozen.
  • If you can, use a high-speed blender: using a high-speed blender is the best way to ensure a perfectly smooth texture. I used my Nama C2 Blender & Juicer (which is both a high-speed blender and a cold-press juicer in one). If you’re currently looking for a new blender, you can use the code “BOV10” at checkout for 10% Off all Nama appliances and accessories. (TIP: from 7/17-7/27 2025, you can get $100 OFF the C2 with the code “BOV100”)
  • Just like cold-pressed juices, smoothies are typically best enjoyed right after blending them. If, however, you decide to store your tropical smoothie for later use, I’d recommend storing it in a glass bottle or jar that comes with an airtight lid in the fridge for a maximum of 2-3 days.

Yes, absolutely! I’d just recommend using at least 2 frozen ingredients in the recipe to get the best consistency!

Can I use fresh passion fruit instead of frozen passion fruit?

frozen passion fruit

Yes! Same as for the mango, however, just make sure at least two of your other ingredients are frozen for the best result.

Can I add protein powder to this tropical smoothie recipe?

Livwell unsweetened plant protein powder

Yes! I’d just recommend using a natural/unflavored variation. My favorite is Livwell’s Natural Unsweetened Plant Protein Powder (you can use “BOV15” at checkout for 15% off your entire order.)

What’s the difference between a juice and a smoothie?

NAMA C2 JUICER & BLENDER

Juice is made using a juicer that extracts the juice from fresh produce while removing the fiber, where are smoothies are made by blending ingredients in a blender. Smoothies conserve the fiber, making them more filling, while juices allow for a higher concentration of produce and therefore nutrients. Both are great, so it just depends on your personal needs and preferences. You can read more about the benefits of juicing here and get beginner juicing tips here.
